Irish names are everywhere on our naming charts – with six Irish names appearing on the top ten most popular choices for boys and two for girls in 2023.

Although we love the current trending choices (we’re looking at you Fiadh and Éabha!) we certainly have a soft spot for the names that we think deserve more time in the spotlight.

If you’re on the hunt for a pretty Irish name on the rare side – you’re in luck as this lovely moniker ticks all the boxes.

Líadan

Thought to mean ‘little grey one’, Líadan is a gorgeous Irish name that was given to nine baby girls last year and sat in the 404th spot.

According to the CSO, it first appeared on Irish charts with a fada in 2018 and beforehand had previously ranked in it’s fada-less form.

Líadan has appeared on naming lists since 1994 but never surpassed the 398th position and peaked in 2005, 2011 and 2017 with eight baby Líadans born.

Also spelled Liadain, these beautiful names are pronounced ‘lee-ah-dawn’ and are such a lovely pick for your bouncing baby girl!
