Paul, the psychic octopus, who called the winners for last summer’s World Cup has died.
“Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight”. This was the statement released by the aquarium. No other information was given.
Paul would have been three-years-old in January. He was born in January 2008 in Weymouth, England.
The first time he showed his spectacular talent for choosing winners was during Euro 2008. He forecast the results for all but two of Germany’s games.
This summer during the World Cup he had a perfect record predicting all of Germany’s results correctly. He then forecast that Spain would win over the Netherlands.
The method his caretakers used to have him choose was tried and tested. They would put out tow containers of water marked with the flag of two teams. In each container they would put a mussel. Paul always took his first mussel from the winners team.
