On Saturday the St. Brigid's club hosted its first ever Red, White and Blue day to honor the New York Ladies team who have reached the All-Ireland final which will take place on Sunday at noon in Croke Park in Dublin against Wicklow.
St. Brigid's is entering its seventh year of existence and is one of the largest and most successful underage girls program outside of Ireland. The team is made up of girls from the Bronx /Yonkers area and caters for girls from the ages of four-18 years of ages participating in monthly blitzes and in the CYC every year. The club also runs a successful camogie program.
The club currently has two representatives on the New York all-star panel, last year’s New York Young Player of the Year Ashley Callery and Caroline McBrein, with several of the current New York panel having assisted with coaching over the years.
Over 75 girls attended the day’s events and were delighted to meet their heroes when several of the New York Ladies panel came down for the event. The girls picked up lots of tips from the ladies which will surely be on show at the next Gaelic 4 Girls blitz on October 16 in Rockland.
After training all-star manager Phil Sheridan spoke to the players and coaches encouraging them to keep up the hard work and make sure some day the players get to play in Croke Park as New York representatives. Captain Molly O'Rourke also thanked the players and coaches for all their efforts for the day and encouraged the girls to keep at it and continue through to senior football.
Sunday’s match is available free to view on TG4 at http://www.tg4.tv/ at 7 a.m. New York time.
