On a golden night for Irish players, Hawthorn’s Gilroy, along with the Tipperary pair, Aisling Moloney (Geelong) and Aisling McCarthy (Freemantle), were all selected as half-forwards in the AFLW team of the year.

Talented Killala native Gilroy, who also represented the Republic of Ireland in soccer, was selected at midfield in the 2017 All-Stars.

Two years later she signed with North Melbourne, before subsequently transferring to the Hawthorns.

It is the first time that multiple Irish players have made the team of the year, and takes Ireland’s number of all-time recipients to five, with Orla O’Dwyer and Niamh Kelly the previous award winners.

Galway’s Aine McDonagh, also with Hawthorn, was nominated but did not make the final selection.

On Saturday morning, the conclusion of the AFLW season will see Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne Kangaroos face off in a repeat of last year’s final.

The Kangaroos include Vikki Wall, Erika O’Shea, Niamh Martin and Bláithín Bogue, while Orla O’Dwyer and Jennifer Dunne will be hoping to go back-to-back with the Lions.
