Young Irish jockey Peter Toole was woken from an induced coma on Monday night as he continues to recover from the serious injury picked up in a fall at Aintree on Saturday.

The 22-year-old from Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath suffered bleeding on the right side of his brain when 100-1 shot Classic Fly fell at the first fence during the Maghull Novices Chase, a curtain raiser to the Grand National.

Toole was taken to Fazakerley Hospital, near the course, but was later transferred to the neighboring Walton Center for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Trainer Charlie Mann, who retains Toole as one of his stable jockeys, said on Tuesday, “His CT scan came back negative, which is good news. His body is okay and he woke up last night from the induced coma and he was moving his legs.

“They then put him back under in the night and he should be coming out of that again.

“I’ve spoken to his father and it is a case of so far, so good. Everything is as good as it can be at this stage. They’ll do some tests on him when he has woken up.”

The Aintree Grand National was won by Irish jockey Jason Maguire aboard Ballabriggs, trained by

Donald McCain whose father Ginger was the trainer of National legend Red Rum.

Meath native Maguire came home on the 14-1 shot ahead of the Irish trainer Oscar Time after setting the pace for much of the race.

Last year’s winner Tony McCoy was third on Don’t Push It after a valiant defense of their crown, with State of Play fourth, Niche Market fifth and Ruby Walsh sixth on the favorite The Midnight Club.

Winning jockey Maguire, from Kilmessan, said afterwards, “This is crazy. I’ve got to thank Donald, the owner Mr. Hemmings, my mother and father, everybody. It’s a dream come true. He loved it.

“I tried to get in the first 10 early on so that if he did make a mistake we hadn’t as much ground to make up -- he loved it and was jumping from fence to fence.

“I got him to the front to get him relaxed and put breathers into him and that helped him get the trip. There was a question mark about him getting the trip, but Donald has done a great job.

“I don’t know what I feel. I’m just overwhelmed, I’m sure it will sink in later.”
