Joshua Tree, ridden by Colm O’Donoghue, won the Pattison Canadian International on Sunday, recording another North American success for Irish horse trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The result means that Joshua Tree is now automatically entered into the Breeders’ Cup Turf, an annual race for three-year-olds and up.

Joshua Tree took the lead from Fifty Proof with a few furlongs to go and finished just ahead of French-trained Mores Wells and Redwood.

O’Donoghue told the Thoroughbred Times website that, “It’s amazing. He was prepared for today and he was impeccably trained for this race by Aidan O’Brien.”

“This is very important to me and means an awful lot. I really owe the owners a lot. They put their trust in me to come over here and ride this horse, and he has been trained specifically for this race by Aidan.”

In the past, O’Brien’s horses have tasted North American success in the Arlington Million (Powerscourt in 2005), the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Johannesburg in 2001), the Breeders’ Cup Marathon (Man of Iron in 2009), the Secretariat Stakes (Ciro in 2000). O’Brien has had success in the Breeders’ Cup Turf before. High Chaparral finished second in  2002 and was in a dead-heat finish in 2003.
