Lightweight Jamie Kavanagh (9-0-1, 4 KOs) defeated Cesar Cisneros by fifth round TKO on Saturday night at the Reliant Arena in Houston on the undercard of the Erik Morales/Danny Garcia light welterweight fight.

Kavanagh was last in action in December in Washington, D.C. and took to Twitter after the fight to inform his fans how the fight went for him.

“Another win. Head clash in 1st round got cut but not bad,” he tweeted.

The 21-year-old does not think the injury will keep him out of the ring for too long, and informed fans his next fight was already set.

“May 19th on @AmirKingKhan undercard,” he tweeted, referring to his assignment on the same card as the rematch between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson, set to take place at the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas.

The Irish Voice tried to catch up with Kavanagh before he headed to Europe for a break but was unsuccessful.  More to come from the Hollywood-based Irishman in the coming weeks.

In other news, Tom Hardwick also has a date set for this next assignment.  The 5-0 heavyweight will fight on the undercard of the Chad Dawson/Bernard Hopkins rematch at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The 27-year-old Yonkers-based Dubliner is just coming off a solid win over Tyrone Gibson at Madison Square Garden on March 17.

“We want to get as many fights as possible because the more fights he has the better,” said trainer Matthew Olszewski after Hardwick’s last win.

As Hardwick gains more experience, he feels more settled in the role of a professional fighter.

“I feel that this is my job now, and I feel like I am going in to do a day’s work,” said the former St. Vincent’s footballer on St. Patrick’s night. “I want to stay busy, you can’t take too long off.”

With his next fight, his second in six weeks, Hardwick is certainly keeping to his word.

Meanwhile, featherweight Patrick Hyland (25-0, 11 KOs) has an opponent confirmed for his May 12 fight at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie.

The 28-year-old, who is trained by Tracy Patterson and promoted by Team Snooki Boxing, will fight Guillermo Sanchez (13-5-1, 5 KOs) in a contest scheduled for eight rounds.  Hyland made his debut under the Snooki banner on January 28 in Atlantic City, and Sanchez should provide him with a decent challenge as he gains more experience stateside.

Finally, Andy Lee’s father helped verify that Tyson Fury qualifies to fight Martin Rogan for the vacant Irish heavyweight title at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on April 14.

Lee and Fury are cousins, and it was the intervention on the middleweight contender’s dad who confirmed the heavyweight’s Irish roots.

“Andy’s father went to the Boxing Union of Ireland and signed an affidavit that my grandmother was Irish, so all the talk about me being Irish or not has been put to bed,” said Fury.

Lee is currently taking a break in Europe after his March 10 win over Saul Duran in Novi, Michigan. 

he recent news that visa issues have derailed Martin Murray’s fight with Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. means the WBC champion is without an opponent for his June date on HBO. 

Lee has repeatedly stated that he is ready for a fight of this magnitude and will no doubt try and get his name back in the mix to fight the Mexican this summer.
