Rory McIlroy has celebrated his return to world number one by mixing with Royalty – regal and sporting.

McIlroy and new girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki chatted with the Queen of England at Newbury races last Friday.

They then flew to Belfast on a private jet to catch his beloved Ulster rugby kingpins in action at Ravenhill.

The US Open champion, currently enjoying some down time after the Masters, was dwarfed by Wozniacki who wore high heels to the races.

But the Danish tennis star, a former world number one herself, was back down to earth when she opted for flat shoes for Ulster’s defeat to Leinster in the Celtic League.

Sports very own ‘royal’ couple are now in Germany where Wozniacki is competing in a high profile tennis tournament.

The decision to bring Wozniacki home to Belfast was a last minute one, according to McIlroy.

He told the BBC: “We were on our way to England from Nice, myself and Caroline, and we sort of talked about it.

“I knew this match was going on and she said to me, ‘how long a flight is it from London to Belfast?’

“I said maybe 45 mins, an hour and she sort of raised her eyebrows and said ‘well do you want to go for the night?’ and I said ‘perfect, great’, so we’re just here for the night.”

McIlroy has also been honored by his hometown of Holywood in County Down where a sign has been erected to celebrate his golfing success.

The ‘Home of Rory McIlroy’ has gone up almost a year after he won the US Open and became one of the hottest properties in international sport.

North Down Borough Council revealed that the McIlroy family especially asked that any signage be low-key.

McIlroy will return home in June for the Irish Open at Royal Portrush.
