Rory McIlroy returned to his home in Northern Ireland last night. The County Down golfer managed to shatter records at the U.S. Open finishing with eight shots in a 16 under par total on Sunday.

The 22-year-old U.S. Open winner landed at Heathrow airport in London on his way home to Northern Ireland on Tuesday afternoon. McIlroy spent the day making press appearances  before flying home to Northern Ireland late last night.

Later tonight a reception will be held at Stormont Castle with First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

After his glorious success which represents his first tournament win, the golfing pro is now setting his sights on the British Open. He is planning on taking a three week break before the tournament.

"I've got three weeks off and then the British Open. So I'm just going to take it easy for the next couple of weeks and let it sink in," he told reporters at Heathrow yesterday.

He also said he plans to play the Irish open in August, which will take place in Killarney.

Mc Ilroy became the youngest  winner of the title since 1923. After Graeme McDowell’s success last year he is also the second consecutive champion from Northern Ireland.
Praising his home on Monday he told UTV News: "I think Northern Ireland is the best place in the world".

"Obviously I'm biased because I'm from there! I love getting home and I'm very proud of where I'm from. It's going to be great to celebrate with my close friends and family."
