An Irish and American gay couple could be the first to win a green card after the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was struck this morning.

Catriona and Cathy completed their interview at the Denver, Colorado USCIS office and cleared all eligibility hurdles except for DOMA.

Despite being married and raising children together, DOMA prevented their marriage from being recognized at the federal level which means that for immigration purposes although legally married they're still considered strangers by the government.

But since the administration has stopped defending DOMA and the DHS was awaiting the ruling in today's decision, their case has not been denied.

In fact they could now be the first couple to have their green card case approved the day the Supreme Court strikes down DOMA.
