Bray in Co Wicklow has been ranked among Time Out's recently updated "24 most underrated travel destinations in the world."

The ranking, Travel Editor Grace Beard writes, is chosen by Time Out's network of expert editors and globetrotting travel writers.

Having made the list, Bray is among the "overlooked spots that offer great (or quiet) alternatives to the classics."

Here's what Time Out Travel contributor Stephen Emms said about Bray: "It was the arrival of the railway in 1854 that made Bray, just twelve miles south of Dublin, so popular it became known as the Brighton of Ireland.

"After years of decline, its mile-long Victorian seafront now buzzes with cafés and restaurants.

"Stroll from the harbour along the esplanade to the 800-foot high Bray Head, worth the hour’s climb for panoramic views from its rocky summit.

"Refuel at Butler & Barry on the beach, before a Guinness at ace local institution the Harbour Bar."

With the newly updated list published this month, Bray has retained its "underrated" distinction from last year's Time Out ranking of the most underrated travel destinations in the world.

Eugene Finnegan from Bray Tourism highlighted the significance of this recognition: “Being acknowledged again by Time Out is a testament to Bray’s enduring appeal.

"The support from the Bray Municipal District and Wicklow County Council has been instrumental in maintaining and enhancing the town’s amenities and public realm.”

Cllr Dermot O’Brien, Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District, welcomed the news: “We are delighted that Time Out has once again recognised Bray.

"This accolade underscores our town’s unique charm and vibrant appeal. Being featured among the world’s most underrated travel destinations is a testament to our community’s hard work and dedication. It highlights Bray as a beloved tourism destination and sets us on the right footing for continued growth and success.”

Bray snuck into this year's list in the final 24th spot, landing right after Lombok in Indonesia, which has "white-sand beaches" as well as "lush rainforests and thundering waterfalls." Meanwhile, Filandia in Colombia was ranked at the top of the list.
