Dublin has been ranked as one of the booziest holiday spots in the world, making it the ideal destination to celebrate the end of "dry January."
Dublin, the home of Guinness, ranked in second place on the list presented by travel platform Holidu.
It’s hard not to be influenced by the Irish in Ireland’s capital, considering that as many as 81.3% of its population consume alcohol – the highest percentage of any country in the study. In fact, almost half of Irish alcohol drinkers have had a heavy session in the last month.
Ultimately, Dublin is well-regarded as a boozy destination, with one of its top attractions, The Guinness Storehouse, seeing more than 1.1 million visitors in 2022.
Holidu says it wanted to find out which destinations are the best for those wanting a sober holiday and which locations were the best for those looking to imbibe.
Their researchers analyzed cities around the world on different factors including the number of after-hours activities per capita, and the share of local drinkers that have had a 'heavy session' in the last months.
The study found that Prague, in the Czech Republic, consumes the most booze per capita of any in the study (and the world) at 14.45 litres of pure alcohol per year. Bear in mind that one pint of beer (at an average 5% ABV) only has an alcohol content of around 0.03 litres according to data, so that’s around 481 beers a year per person!
In third place is Berlin, Germany's capital and largest city. Berlin could be very tempting to have a few beers in, with average prices there costing £3.87 - not expensive at all for a major capital city! There are plenty of drinking establishments to choose from too, as almost a fifth of all Tripadvisor things to do in the city are related to its nightlife.
