Traveling to Ireland by air 

Ireland is served by three main international airports, based in Dublin, Shannon, and Cork. You’ll also find busy regional airports in Galway, Knock, Sligo, Waterford, and Kerry, so you and your guests will never be too far from your wedding day destination! 

Travel in Ireland by train 

Once you’re in Ireland, train travel is a great way to get from A to B with glorious views along the way. Irish Rail or Iarnród Éireann, is the country’s main rail provider, serving most of the country’s major hubs. Just note that it’s not possible to reach every part of the country by rail so if you or your guests are planning on taking a train journey ahead of your wedding, make sure you’ve got your plans in place at the other end.

Travel by bus

Ireland’s national bus service is provided by Bus Éireann, with major routes connecting Ireland’s biggest towns and cities and inter-city services allowing for travel around local areas. While cross-country routes are largely reliable, and a lovely way to see the country, you might want to reconsider using local services if you’re on a tight schedule – or if you’re carrying precious cargo like a wedding dress!

Private buses and coaches are also available for hire and are an excellent way to guarantee that your wedding party will have the transport they need when they need it. Check with your wedding venue for the best local recommendations.

Travel by car

Renting a car while you’re in Ireland will give you complete freedom to get where you want to go, on your own schedule. Driving on the left-hand side of the road might seem a bit tricky at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of it!

Most rental cars in Ireland are manual or stick shift, so if you’d like to rent an automatic be sure to make your reservation well in advance to be sure of availability. You’ll find a range of car sizes on offer – just bear in mind that Irish city streets and country roads can be quite narrow, so something smaller might be easier to maneuver.

Make sure you’ve got your original driver’s license with you when you go to rent a car in Ireland – a photocopy won’t be sufficient. It’s also important to make sure that all your insurance details are in order before you hit the road.

On Irish highways (or freeways), you’ll typically find two to three lanes, with the fast lane on the right. Don’t forget to check and see if there’ll be any toll charges along with your journey route, and have some Euro coins at hand to pay any fees.

No matter how you choose to get around while you’re here, you can be sure that the Irish are used to welcoming visitors from all over the world on their highways and byways. Locals will always be happy to point you in the right direction – and get you to the church on time!
