As a photographer for many years, George Munday always knew that some of the most stunning sights in Ireland were hiding right in his adopted home county of Waterford.
Originally from Liverpool, which he describes as "the second capital of Ireland," he graduated from the Birmingham School of Photography in 1975, started a photographic career as a photo-journalist in the UK, relocated to Dublin to co-found Slidefile. "In 2003 I swapped city-life in 2003 for the peaceful life-style of the County Waterford coast, where I ran workshops and worked as a freelance for clients including Tourism Ireland."
His recently released book, Waterford: A County Revealed, features 160 full color pages of his best shots of the county, from Dungarvan to Dunmore, from the Waterford Quays to the Comeragh Mountains. It also inludes an introduction by the renowned travel writer Dervla Murphy.
"County Waterford can boast the oldest city in Ireland, pretty fishing ports; a mining legacy; historic artifacts; ancient castles and charming villages. It’s a substantial and varied heritage waiting to be explored," Munday says.
But, as Munday points, out that isn't an option when you're far away. Part of his aim is for Waterford Revealed to allow people who have never been to Waterford to take in its beauty, and to give Waterford natives who are a long way away the chance to reflect on the gorgeous landscape back home.
A labor of love, each order of the book is individually printed by Munday and delivered within a week.
