Irish stars Cillian Murphy, Paul Mescal, and Barry Keoghan are among the Irish talent who are nominated for the 2024 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards.
Cork native Murphy, who starred in the summer blockbuster "Oppenheimer," is nominated in the Leading Actor category alongside fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan who starred in "Saltburn."
Overall, "Oppenheimer" landed 13 nominations, more than any other film.
"I couldn't be happier that the British Academy recognized so many of my collaborators on 'Oppenheimer,' especially Chris Nolan," Murphy said on Thursday, according to the AP. "Working on the film was an experience I'll never forget."
While this is Murphy's first BAFTA nomination, Dublin native Keoghan won the BAFTA last year for his role in "The Banshees of Inisherin."
Meanwhile, Irish actor Paul Mescal landed a nomination in the Supporting Actor category for his role in "All Of Us Strangers," his first major nomination for the role. Surprisingly, his Irish co-star Andrew Scott missed out on a nomination, despite having received a Golden Globe nomination.
Kildare native Mescal previously won a BAFTA for his role as Connell Waldron in the smash-hit "Normal People," and was also nominated last year for "Aftersun."
Elsewhere, "Poor Things" - from Irish producers Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney through their Dublin-based Element Pictures - scooped an impressive 11 nominations. Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan was also nominated for his work on the Emma Stone-fronted film.
Lowe and Guiney said on Thursday they were delighted with the nominations, "which build on the recent success of the film at the Golden Globes, and recognize the amazing work of our incredible cast, led By Emma Stone, our brilliant screenwriter Tony McNamara and the artistry and talent of our amazing heads of department."
Irish producers Shirley O'Connor and Medb Riordan also landed a nomination in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer category for their film "Earth Mama," which they made with British director Savannah Leaf.
(And we'd be remiss not to mention Ireland's sweetheart Ayo Edebiri, who is nominated in the EE Rising Star Award category.)
The 2024 BAFTA Film nominations were announced today, Thursday, January 18 by Kingsley Ben-Adir and Naomi Ackie. The BAFTA award ceremony, which will be broadcast on BBC One, will be held in London on February 18, presented by actor David Tennant.
