The Irish film industry is well represent among the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards.
Irish nominees up for an Oscar Saoirse Ronan for best actress in "Brooklyn," Michael Fassbender for best actor in the movie "Steve Jobs" and the Canadian-Irish produced "Room," based on the novel by Emma Donohue, is up for best movie.
Both "Room" and "Brooklyn," which is based on the novel by Colm Toibin, are up for best adapted screenplay while Lenny Abrahamson is up for a statue for his role as director of "Room."
Ronan is up against "Room’s" Brie Larson in the best actress category. Producer of "Room," Ed Guiney, told the Irish Times “What the heck was that. We would have been happy with Brie getting in. We had kind of given up on best picture. The news about Lenny is so deserved and so extraordinary.”
Upon hearing of her nomination, Saoirse Ronan released the following statement: "When we made 'Brooklyn,' we had no idea of what was to come.
"It is the most personal film I have ever done, the hardest one too.
"I am honoured to represent this film with my friends - John, Nick, Finola, Yves, Colm, Amanda. This has all been a dream. To see how the film has been embraced has been heartwarming.
"Thank you so very much to The Academy - you are a group of people I respect greatly and to be recognized by you means so much. Thank you!"
Irish President, former Minister for the Arts, Michael D Higgins, was “delighted” to hear of the Irish nominees.
In a statement, the President said: “This year's Oscars shortlist is a remarkable testimony of the vitality and diversity of the talent available to the Irish film industry.
He added, “To have Irish nominees represented in several categories indicates the depth of the international recognition for the talent that now exists.”
Aside from the Irish pride, it was "The Revenant," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, that was the big winner among the list of nominees. The semi-biographical western film is up for 12 awards.
