“Oppenheimer” was the winningest film at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards despite the film’s Irish star Cillian Murphy was snubbed in the Best Actor category.
Murphy, the Cork native who played J. Robert Oppenheimer in the summer blockbuster, lost out to Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) during the award ceremony that was hosted in Los Angeles last night, Sunday, January 14.
Murphy’s snub comes after he won both a Golden Globe and Desert Palm Achievement Award, and received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for his portrayal of the famous American physicist. The Irish actor has also been generating serious buzz for the Oscars, the nominations for which will be announced on Tuesday, January 23.
While Murphy missed out, “Oppenheimer” walked away with eight Critics Choice Awards, the most of any film this year - Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Visual Effects, Best Editing (Jennifer Lame), Best Acting Ensemble, Best Score (Ludwig Göransson), Best Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr).
During his acceptance speech, Nolan offered a special nod to his frequent collaborator Murphy, describing him as "incomparable."
Downey Jr also gave Murphy a shout-out: "I gotta thank Chris [Nolan], Emma [Thomas], and Cillian, they're the holy trinity, they were leading from the front the entire time."
Downey Jr and Murphy also produced one of the most viral moments of the evening when Downey Jr tried to kiss Murphy after he was announced the winner in the Best Supporting Actor category:

Elsewhere during the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night, Ireland got an unlikely but much-welcomed shout-out from Ayo Edebiri as she accepted the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award for her role in “The Bear.”
"To everybody in Boston, Barbados, Nigeria, Ireland in many ways, thank you so much, I love you," Edebiri said while accepting her award, drawing laughs from the crowd.
The Boston native actress endeared herself to Irish fans last year when she inexplicably yet hilariously claimed she played Jenny the Donkey in the Irish film "The Banshees of Inisherin."
The bit has turned into a running joke that has been widely embraced by her legions of new Irish fans.
