The Script, one of Ireland’s hottest new bands, has announced that they will be opening for Paul McCartney’s much anticipated concert at Shea Stadium in New York.

In a press conference at Ireland’s Oxegen Music Festival on Friday, the Irish trio, made up of lead singer Danny O’Donaghue, guitarist Mark Sheehan and drummer Glen Power, revealed that Ringo Starr may join Sir Paul on stage as well.

“Just to even get a chance to play on the same stage for us is amazing and we’re hearing rumors that Ringo may play with him as well,” the Dubliners said.

McCartney will be performing at the newly renovated home of the New York Mets baseball team as an official reopening of the stadium, now called Citi Field, Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18.

McCartney has a long history with the Mets. The Beatles were the first act to play at Shea  in 1965, and McCartney made a special appearance at Billy Joel's "Last Play at Shea" show that closed the stadium last year.

The Script’s O’Donaghue pointed out that though people are saying that Paul McCartney is reopening Shea Stadium, his band should get some credit as well. “We’re like – ‘We’re on before him,’” he told the press conference jokingly.

The Irish pop-rock band admits that they’ve never been to an American baseball game.  “I don’t like baseball to be honest it’s boring. I hate it,” O’Donaghue said.

To add fuel to the fire for New York sports fans, the band then gushed about how that sat front court at a Boston Celtics game, and loved it.

The Script’s Citi Field performance is not the only huge gig the band will be playing this summer – they’ll also open for U2 at their 360 Tour stops in Dublin’s Croke Park.

The Irish band is already well-established in Ireland and Britain, where they reached multi-platinum sales with the release of their album in August 2008. They released the CD in the U.S. on St. Patrick’s Day this year to rave reviews, and their songs “We Cry” and “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” are popular hits worldwide.

The guys have spent a lot of time in the States promoting their music, which has been featured on VH1’s “Sober House” and CBS’ “Ghost Whisperer.” They’ve played sell-out concerts around the U.S., where they say Irish people show up in droves, waving their flags and supporting their band.

“It’s been brilliant,” O’Donaghue said. “The reception has been fantastic for us over there. But it’s a huge country, man…it takes time to get over there.”

A big indicator of The Script’s American success is their appearance in an episode of MTV smash reality hit “The Hills.”

“I had no idea how massive it was,” O’Donaghue said.

After the guys appeared on the TV show, they say they were constantly recognized on the streets of L.A. and New York.

 “They don’t even know we sing, they’ve just seen us on ‘The Hills’ and they’re like ‘Oh my God,t here’s that guy from ‘The Hills’!” said O’Donaghue.

The popular Irish group also announced summer concert dates in Ireland, saying they want to “really give back to our Irish fans.”

They’ll play five shows at Dublin’s intimate Olympia venue from August 25-30, two shows in Belfast on September 1 and 2, and a show in Killarney on September 5.

O’Donaghue explained: “A lot of bands come in, they do Ireland as a warm up gig for the rest of Europe, where as we’re using the rest of Europe as a warm up gig for our Irish dates.”
