Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ have announced details of its 1916 program for international audiences, with a wide range of programming, including; documentaries, news coverage, debate and analysis in addition to an online exhibition and live streaming of the State’s official 1916 centenary events.
RTÉ 1916 is an ambitious program of content and events across television, radio, mobile and online which invites people, at home and throughout the world, to watch, listen and take part as they commemorate and celebrate, debate and analyze the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Featuring major television drama, groundbreaking documentary, curated on-street events and a slate of young people’s program, RTÉ 1916 considers the event itself as well as the broader cultural, political and historical complexities of the Rising, and its impact on the decades and century that followed. Programmed in both languages, RTÉ 1916 will reach out to Irish people of all ages, in Ireland and around the world.
On 14th March, RTÉ Player (across Desktop, iOS and Android app) will launch a dedicated 1916 Hub, offering a curated collection of RTÉ 1916 related television content. The range of programming available will include:
- Documentaries: “Inside the GPO,” “Seven Women,” Joe Duffy's “Children of the Revolution,” “Ireland's Rising,” and “Life Before the Rising”
- News coverage and analysis across RTÉ’s ews program
- Live streaming of the main State commemoration on Easter Sunday and other Easter Sunday commemorative events taking place in Glasnevin Cemetery and at Kilmainham Gaol
- “A Nation’s Voice,” an open-air concert at Collins Barracks on Easter Sunday featuring 1,100 singers joining the National Symphony Orchestra
- RTÉ will present “Centenary,” a celebration of 100 years of Irish culture from the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre which will be broadcast live around the world on RTÉ Player. Through live and pre-recorded performances from some of Ireland’s most popular artists, “Centenary” will tell the story of the 1916 Rising and celebrate the country that we have become.
RTÉ's 1916 television content cleared for international audiences will be available to watch worldwide for free through the RTÉ Player service, available across Desktop, iOS and Android app. Currently audiences living abroad can enjoy the following 1916 documentaries available now on RTÉ Player; Ireland’s Rising, Life Before the Rising and Ar Son Na Poblachta.

Providing our international audience with the means to access our programming and be part of events at home is an imperative for RTÉ, and we are delighted to offer this breadth of content for free to audiences worldwide.”
RTÉ’s official 1916 website www.rte.ie/1916 features a new online exhibition “They Were There,” which currently presents 50 witness accounts of 1916 events on an interactive map. The previously unseen and unheard audio and visual collection features men and women who were members of the Irish Volunteers, the Citizen Army, Cumann na mBan, the British army, the Dublin Metropolitan Police and citizens of Dublin. Together they help build a vivid picture of what was happening across Dublin city and beyond during Easter 1916.
The website also features an international section which will continue to provide updates for international audiences on RTÉ’s 1916 programme offering as it becomes available.
