Sharon Horgan nabbed two Emmy nominations for her hit Apple TV+ show “Bad Sisters” this year, but if she wins in the Best Actress category tonight, she will set a new Irish record.
If Horgan wins in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for her role as Eva Garvey in “Bad Sisters,” she will become the first-ever Irish actress to win the category.
Horgan is nominated in the category alongside Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets"), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale"), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).
While Horgan's win would set an exciting Irish record, VegasInsider has her at the bottom of the pool in the odds as of January 12. Sarah Snook appears to be the overall favorite for the win, especially after the Aussie actress won the Golden Globe on January 7.
As VegasInsider notes, Horgan was born in the UK to an Irish mother and a Kiwi father. (Sadly, Horgan's father died on December 27. His funeral was held at The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Termonfeckin, Co Louth.)
However, Horgan moved to Co Meath from London with her family when she was just four years old. She holds Irish citizenship and readily identifies as Irish.
“It gets boring saying: ‘Irish, actually,’” she admitted to the Irish Times in 2018. “But we really shouldn’t let it go.”
Aside from the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award, Horgan is also nominated in the Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series category alongside Dave Finkel and Brett Baer at the 75th Emmy Awards.
“Bad Sisters” is also nominated in the Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series category (Dearbhla Walsh) and the Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series category (Nina Gold and Lucy Amos.)
Surprisingly, however, “Bad Sisters” missed out on the Outstanding Drama Series, nor did any of the other ensemble cast members land an acting nomination.
Apple TV+ describes "Bad Sisters," which is set in Ireland, as a "delicious blend of both dark comedy and thriller."
The show, Apple TV+ says, follows the lives of the Garvey sisters, who are bound together by the premature death of their parents and a promise to always protect one another.
Alongside Horgan, the show stars Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene, and Eve Hewson as the (Irish) Garvey sisters.
After a critically acclaimed first season, Apple TV+ confirmed that "Bad Sisters" will be back for a second season.
