Irish language hip-hop trio Kneecap had a blunt response after their self-titled film did not receive a nomination in the International Feature Film category or the Music (Original Song) on Thursday, January 23.

"F--- the Oscars," the Belfast-based trio said on social media, adding "Free Palestine."

Their post racked up more than 7.3k likes on Instagram and more than 1.4k likes on X in less than an hour.

The group's semi-autobiographical film "Kneecap," which enjoyed great critical acclaim throughout the year, made the shortlist for the International Feature Film category, while their song "Sick in the Head" made the shortlist for the Music (Original Song) category back in December.

"Easy peasy," Kneecap said after making the two shortlists last month.

Meanwhile, "The Apprentice," produced by the Dublin-based Tailored Films, received nominations in the Best Actor (Sebastian Stan) and Best Supporting Actor (Jeremy Strong) categories.

Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde from Tailored Films said on Thursday: "It's a huge honour to have our film recognised by our peers in the film industry across the world with multiple nominations at the Oscars, BAFTAs, and IFTAs.

"It's a massive testament to the strength of the Irish film industry and the talent available here that the film is receiving acclaim not only from audiences and critics, but from the wider filmmaking industry.

"We're delighted to be able to be a part of the film and to spread the word about the wealth of talent available in Ireland to international production partners."

Overall, Irish talent was largely locked out of the 2025 Oscar nominations, even after industry publication Variety predicted some major nominations last August.

Among Variety's Oscar predictions at the time was Saoirse Ronan winning Best Actress for "The Outrun," but the film ended up with no nominations. Variety also predicted that "Blitz," also starring Ronan, would pick up a few nominations, but this didn't come to pass.

Variety had predicted that "Kneecap" would get a nomination in the International Feature Film category but that "Emilia Pérez," which was ultimately nominated on Thursday, would win.

"Gladiator II," starring Co Kildare native Paul Mescal, was predicted to get some nominations, though Variety did not have Mescal in the running for an acting prize. The film was ultimately only nominated in the Costume Design category.

Variety also pegged "Joker: Folie à Deux," which features Irish actor Brendan Gleeson, as getting a few nominations, but the film was completely shut out on  Thursday.

Meanwhile, Irish films "Room Taken" and "Clodagh" had both made the Live Action Short category shortlist, but neither ended up getting a nomination.

The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live at 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT on ABC, streamed live on Hulu, and will air live in more than 200 territories worldwide.

For the first time, Conan O'Brien will be on hosting duties.
