Two songs from the new Irish film "Flora and Son" have made the shortlist for the Music (Original Song) category at the 96th Academy Awards.
“High Life” and “Meet In The Middle” from “Flora and Son," the new John Carney film starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, are among the 15 songs that have been shortlisted for the 2024 Oscars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hewson (daughter of U2 frontman Bono) co-wrote the two songs with Carney and Gary Clark. In 2008, "Falling Slowly" from Carney's film "Once" won the Best Original Song Oscar.
In a funny twist, Deadline reported the same day that the Oscar shortlist was revealed that Hewson admitted before taking the lead role in Carney's latest musical project that she was "scared of singing."
The Dublin native, of course, overcame her fears and now says: "I actually really like my voice, now.
"It was such a psychological thing in my head that this was the one thing I would never do that I’d just completely written off the possibility.
"So, it’s wild—and important for me, actually—that this happened to me, and that I overcame it.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists in ten categories for the 96th Academy Awards on December 21 - Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound and Visual Effects.
"Poor Things," the film starring Emma Stone from the Irish production company Element Pictures, made the shortlist in three categories - Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), and Visual Effects.
Meanwhile, "In The Shadow of Beirut," Ireland's selection for the International Film Feature category, did not make the Oscars shortlist. Earlier this year, "The Quiet Girl" ("An Cailín Ciúin") made history in that category as the first-ever Irish language film to be nominated at the Academy Awards. (It ultimately lost out to "All Quiet on the Western Front.")
Three films from Screen Ireland's flagship short film schemes that were in the running for the 96th Academy Awards also failed to make the shortlists.
Sinéad O'Loughlin's "Lamb" and Lochlainn McKenna's "Two For The Road" were in consideration for Best Live Action Short Film, while Jessica Patterson's "Worry World" was in consideration for the Best Animated Short Film category.
"An Irish Goodbye," filmed in Northern Ireland and starring Northern Irish actors, won the Oscar for the Short Film (Live Action) category earlier this year.
Nominations voting for the 96th Academy Awards runs from January 11 through January 16, and all the nominees are set to be announced on January 23.
The 96th Academy Awards, set to be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air live on March 10, 2024.
