Actress Sarah Jessica Parker shares the Irish tradition she has started to follow to ring in the New Year.
Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick, and their three children are believed to have spent the festive holidays at their vacation home in Co Donegal.
In the early hours of New Year's Day, Parker took to Instagram to share an old Irish tradition that she will be introducing to the "Broderick-Parker home."
The image's quote reads: “In Ireland, on New Year’s Eve at midnight, it’s a tradition to open your backdoor and let the old year out and open your front door to let the new one in. Out with the old, in with the new. I like that.”
Parker added: “A toast to 2023, to the year ahead, and to all of you. Hoping this finds you somewhere that brings you joy as this year comes to a close, with a loved one or a good book or a delicious meal or all of the above. Cheers to all, near and far. SJ X.”

The family frequently spends time at their Donegal hideaway, which her husband Broderick inherited from his parents.
A few years back, Broderick told the Irish Voice, sister publication to IrishCentral, about his Irish homestead: “You know the landscape, the hiking but it's also the people there that I grew up knowing.
"Real farmers who worked the hay in the summer and milked cows. I really, really got to know my neighbors and that just doesn't happen in the same way here in the US.
"We just really felt welcomed there [in Donegal]. It's another culture, a wonderful place.”
The house, which lies on the outskirts of the village of Kilcar, was bought by Broderick’s family more than 40 years ago. In 2018 the couple began a major renovation project to give a new lease of life to the cottage while also preserving the original home.
Parker is currently taking a break in Donegal in the lead-up to making her West End Debut in Plaza Suite at London’s Savoy Theatre later this month, which she will appear in alongside her husband.
