Whether it’s due to Hollywood’s “The Quiet Man” or a nostalgia for Irish history, there’s something idyllic and cozy about the idea of living in a cottage in Ireland. We decided to take a look at the cottages on the market around Ireland – from the lap of luxury to the rustic and rural.

The term cottage tends to get thrown around casually to describe any house with wooden windows or a thatched roof (a la “The Quiet Man”) but a cottage is “a small house, typically one in the country.”

IrishCentral carried out a survey in 2014 found that one-third of Americans want to buy property in Ireland and retire here. We could certainly think of worse plans. In our series of property-snooping articles we decided to indulge your dreams and take a look at the properties currently for sale in Ireland.

Castlecoote is a village located just five miles outside Roscommon Town (pop. 64,436). Castlecoote a picturesque village, where the remains of the castle of Sir Charles Coote, ‘President of Connaught’ during the rebellion of 1641, still stand. The castle towers now form part of the estate of Castlecoote House, a historic house and guesthouse which, in the 18th century, was the birthplace of the celebrated Gunning sisters. Castlecoote is a noted angling base on the River Suck, renowned for its coarse and trout fishing, running through the village.
