Organizers of a benefit concert for the Berkeley balcony survivors and their families say they have raised more than €30,000 from the event held at the Academy venue in Dublin last Thursday.
Toni Wall from Wall2Wall PR told the Irish Times that the event raised about €15,000 in ticket sales, while while an associated account on website gofundme.com had received more than €8,000 by Friday morning. She said she expected raffle ticket receipts to bring in another few thousand euro. The money will help survivors cover medical expenses, flight tickets, home refittings, and other costs.
The concert was hosted by Nicky Byrne, and included performances from Mundy, Jape, Daft Funk, Kurtis Wade and Kodaline. Wall says that everyone involved in the event offered their services for free.
Six students were killed and seven injured last month when the balcony they were standing on collapsed at a 21st birthday party in Berkeley, California.
Aoife Beary, from Blackrock, Co Dublin, was one of the J1 students that was seriously injured after the fourth-floor balcony collapsed. The 21-year-old, who was put in an induced coma after the incident, is still struggling to recognize family and friends, the Irish Mirror reports.
Her cousin Eimear O’Doherty traveled to San Francisco for a 10 day visit to Aoife and her family.
Speaking about Aoife’s condition on 2FM upon her return to Dublin, O’Doherty said: “She’s moved from ICU and she’s in Santa Clara Medical Center, which is a rehabilitation centre, where Clodagh (Cogley) and Hannah (Waters) are as well.
“She’s doing much better; she still has her good days and bad days. The biggest concern at the minute is her brain injury, so that’s going to be a long road.”
“She’s off the critical list but there’s no time scale about when she’s coming home.”
She told Drive By presenters Colm Hayes and Al Porter that her cousin was not able to communicate with her.
"You want to think she recognised you - it’s hard to say, you don’t know,” she said.
