President John F. Kennedy once worried his son's obsession with flying would end in tragedy.

The president's shocking premonition of JFK Jr's death can be heard in newly released tapes, where the can be heard telling an aide he worried about the time 'when he's old enough and wants to learn to fly.'

And in another startling irony he warns the Secret Service to ease his security detail because, he says, 'nobody is going to shoot me.'

President Kennedy was shot dead in Dallas in November 1963 and his son JFK Jr was killed when his plane crashed into the sea off Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts in 1999.

President Kennedy's fears for his young son's safety can be clearly heard in a series of lost 1960's audio tapes that were unveiled this week by Helen O’Donnell, the daughter of the former president's aide Kenneth O'Donnell.

In an article quoted in The Daily Mail, O'Donnell quotes her father saying JFK was worried about his son's fascination with flying.

'The president said to me: "The real question I’m going to have to face is when he’s old enough and wants to learn to fly.

O'Donnell's father added: 'John Jr. loved helicopters. He would race over and get on a helicopter, and when it was time for us to leave, he refused to get out of it. The poor Secret Service would take John kicking and squabbling off the helicopter or the plane.

Kennedy was 38 when the plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic off Martha’s Vineyard. The crash killed him, his wife Carolyn, 33, and her sister Lauren.
