Cliona Standún, of Standún’s in Spiddal has received the prestigious accolade of Business Woman of the year 2013 in the self-employed category, in an awards ceremony held at the G Hotel Galway.

The Annual Network Galway Business Women of the Year Awards, which were presented by a host of stars such as renowned Milliner Philip Treacy and RTE Dragons Den’s Ramona Nicholas and Barry O’Sullivan, is in its ninth consecutive year.

To be shortlisted for an award, applicants must go through an application process, followed by an interview and three finalists are then chosen. To be successful in this category, entrants must demonstrate that they have clear goals to support their vision, progress towards goals, market/industry presence, customers, and business goals for the future.

The description of the award is “An empowered woman with business spirit and business acumen who has developed a business idea from concept to commercial success.”

Cliona certainly knows a thing or two about being a woman in business, managing the everyday running of the Standún store, which was originally established by her grandparents in 1946. Standún reflects all that is best in Irish and International produce marrying the traditional and contemporary to stunning effect.

On winning the award, Cliona said, “It means alot to me to have won the award because the last three years have been very challenging for retail businesses and although Standun has won many awards in the past three years it is great to get recognition for my efforts and various initiatives.”

The winners from the first three categories will go forward for The Network Ireland National Business Woman of the Year Awards in 2013 in Fota Island, Cork this October. Award Sponsors for 2013 are Galway City & County Enterprise Board and Galway Independent.
