A 22-year-old Irish J1 student has died two days after diving from a pier in Chicago.

Keith O’Reilly, believed to be from Galway city, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 6:22 p.m yesterday evening.

Chicago police believe that O'Reilly apparently hit his head on rocks after diving into shallow water off a pier at North Avenue Beach at about 4:10 a.m. on Thursday.

A woman, who jumped into the water to pull him out, called 911 and O'Reilly was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

He had been working for the summer at a hotel in Chicago.
