A turf co-operative called Sneaky Peat’s, based in Caherciveen Co. Kerry, has come up with an innovative way to sell Irish turf to foreign markets. Use it as barbecue fuel.
The company has already packed 10 tons of Irish turf, which is destined for the US.
Peter Baker of Sneaky Peat founded his company after he realized the unique taste that could be achieved by replacing coal with turf when barbecuing.
Described on their website as “A tradition of atmosphere and flavor specially re-created for today's gourmet griller." The product seems to be very popular with Americans as Sneaky Peat’s website is inundated with testimonials.
One couple in Ohio said that "We're grillin' everything with Sneaky Peat from beef & chicken fajitas to elk burgers. Right now it's 2 NY Strips slow grillin' using 1 puck - my heritage calls me across the ages every time the aroma wafts all around."
In the future, the co-operative intends to go one step further and bottle the smell of a burning turf fire.
